If you only want to make a single change, such as if you discover that you don’t like the higher difficulty level and just wish to dial it back permanently to a lower level, this trick is perfect and requires no outside software the change will persist over time even if you leave the game and lose the open-to-LAN cheat mode you enabled. Outside of opening your game to the LAN and enabling cheats every time you restart the game to make any changes you want, you will not be able to adjust the difficulty level.
